Fengyu Wang 王風雩
A PhD candidate at the Institute for East Asian Art History of Heidelberg University, Fengyu specializes in the particular Japanese narrative art format of emaki 絵巻 or illuminated handscrolls, and investigates in his current project their provenance, reception history, and reproductions in art publications as well as digitization projects. Having ventured out of Beijing for college in Wisconsin, Fengyu studied fine arts and Japanese literature before embarking on an M.A program in Transcultural Studies in Germany. While his main research interests lie in the Karmic Origins of the Tenjin Deity (Tenjin engi 天神縁起) and medieval Japanese paintings, he is also intrigued by the multifaceted manuscript traditions, the syncretic material culture of Shinto-Buddhism, and the entanglements between modernity, nationalism, and art historical writings. Recent obsessions for him include adhocist scroll mounting, recreating culinary extravagances from Butter, and frustratingly acoustics-centered bird watching.
